SKS Rifle, Chinese Type-56

This Chinese Type-56 SKS rifle came to me in a lot sale of used firearms and became a perpetual project and a great testing ground for tinkering with firearms.

Seriously, you don’t have to really worry about ruining an SKS. Though proven in combat all over the world and still in service in some countries today, by the standards of the American shooting community the SKS is ruined right out of the factory. If for no other reason than its communist heritage.

Certainly it has its shortcomings as all military surplus rifles do, and probably more than any other semi-automatic rifle that has ever seen military service.

Unfortunately there are just too many modifications to fit into one post so I thought I’d start with two of the end products.

Chinese Type-56 SKS modified

The same rifle, in two different standard stock configurations. Top, is the rifle in the original Chinese wooden furniture, refinished with walnut stain and a hand-rubbed oil finish. Below, a Ram-Line Polymer stock shortened to a 13.5 inch length of pull to match the original and finished in DuraCoat matte olive drab.

Both stocks weigh about the same but the polymer stock incorporates a Tapco gas tube cover with a Picatinny rail that creates a secure mounting platform for Long Eye Relief optics, or “scout” scopes.

Both configurations are suitable for hunting in most states for game up to the size of White Tail Deer or at most Black bear. This particular rifle’s shortened barrel makes it more suitable for personal defense than hunting however, but can serve both purposes in the right hands.

    Hey Gregory
Would you be interested to sell that Ramline stock? If not no worries!
I’m having trouble finding a Monte Carlo other than an ATI. Ramline discontinued their SKS line.

Wow. You’re right! Even the ebay listings have just one, but for a very reasonable price.

I actually would be willing to sell, if you’re in the US? Otherwise US export laws become too murky to navigate. I’d throw in the matching gas tube if you’ve got a Type 56, no promises on fit with your gun though. As is.
