The Hoosier Schoolmaster 1899 Edition

As family lore has it, this book of Mr. Eggleston’s was based loosely upon some of the exploits of my Great Great Great Grandfather, one Merrit C. Welch.

Family stories also have it that Mr. Eggleston was a distant cousin of Col. Welch, as he came to be known after the American Civil War.

Keep in mind it did not require too much to become a Colonel in the Union Army during the Civil War. A reasonable education, not being a blathering idiot, and a knack for not getting killed provided a fast track to leadership for many Union officers.

I found this copy of the book while searching for another old book, “Indiana at Antietam” which relates more factual accounts of my ancestor. I found only one very expensive copy available, but a great many inexpensive copies of Eggleston’s book.
